Project Description

River Suir Bank Protection Works

The embankments, over a length of 250m, of the River Suir downstream of Newcastle, Co. Tipperary were identified by Inland Fisheries Ireland for remedial works due to ongoing erosion. The erosion of the banks resulted in uncontrolled land take of the adjacent agricultural grasslands on both sides of the river.

A number of engineering solutions were considered in terms of best practice, constructibility, cost, durability, environmental impact, impact on the hydrology of the river and future maintenance.

The chosen solution was a combination of heavy rock armour and natural vegetation.

Planning permission was received for the proposed works from both Tipperary and Waterford County Councils. Works are due to commence soon.
